    Default corner pins?

So a question about corner pins. I used to never miss these but now I rarely make them. My first question is when you talk about standing on X board, which foot is counted? As a lefty I generally start with my right foot on board 17-18 and throw over board 7. This leaves my left foot on about board 12ish? I don't pay attention to where my left foot is as I use my right foot as my alignment. So do I say I am starting on board 17 or board 12 (left foot or right foot)?

So in the past I stood all the way to the right just inside board 5 and threw about the center arrow for 7 pins (can't remember for sure what my mark was as it has been a long time). For the 10 pin I have been moving my feet about 3 boards right and my mark 5 boards right. Still experimenting with this as I haven't been consistent with it.

My question is what is more widely used? For you right handers do you stand way left and throw more straight down the 1st or 2nd arrow for the 7 or do you go cross alley? Same with the 10. Do you use the right side of the lane and throw more straight down the lane or go cross alley? I used to go cross alley for 7's and 10's but not having much luck with that now. I know it's me and not the ball or lanes but if I have to relearn it I might as well learn the easier way.

the inside edge of your slide foot is typically the convention used to describe what board you are standing or sliding on. It is also where you measure you laydown point from.

Example: a righthand player says "I'm standing on 20" this means the inside edge of their left foot is on board 20.

Typically Right or Left handers shoot corner pins straight, cross lane(alley), this offers the highest margin of error.

I typically for a 10 on a THS stand 35 (Right handed) and spot inside the third arrow with a plastic ball. For a 7 it varies with how much oil there is in the center of the lane but I always use what ever I am using for a strike ball. Steve

Thanks Bowl. So in that case I would say I stand at board 15ish (from left edge) or 25ish (from right edge).

Lately for 7 pins I have been standing about board 17 (from right) and aiming for 3rd arrow from left (or just inside 3rd). If I can hit my mark it works...lol. 10 pin I haven't really found anything consistent enough to figure it out.

When I was a teenager my father and I would play a game he called low ball that was great practice for those corner pins. The object was to get the lowest score possible without throwing any gutter balls or missing pins on any ball. A perfect score was 20, 2 pins (the corners) each frame. Throw a gutter on ball #1 and you mark it a strike. Throw a gutter or missing the remaining pins all together on ball #2 and you mark it a spare.

Even with my long absence from bowling, to this day I rarely miss a corner pin or any other single pin spare.

I have heard of that game. Unfortunately right now I don't have much time to get out and practice. I used to never miss those but not sure if it is the newer balls, synthetic lanes, or me. I never bowled on synthetic lanes until a few months ago. Back in my hayday I was using a urethane ball on wood lanes.

I made a slight change to the way I target for 10 pin. Instead of targeting an arrow or a board on the lane, I target the actual pin instead. Has worked out pretty well for me since I made that change.

If I remember correctly Rob M. suggested this.

I will give this a try. I haven't 'pin' bowled since I was probably 10 years old...lol. But I'll try it.

Tried this in practice tonight and right in the gutter....lol. I made the 7 1 of 3 times tonight. I keep missing to the inside. Pretty sure it's a mental thing so just need to get over the fear of the gutter...lol. I missed the 4, 7, 8 too (got the 8). I was better the 3rd game so started getting more comfortable as the night went on.

If you are throwing a ball that hooks slightly, you need, as a lefty, to aim either just left of the 7 pin, or at least at the left most edge of the pin. Obviously you used to be pretty good at hitting corner pins with your strike ball, but you really have to be almost perfect to make it.
