Thread: More surface for dry lanes?

Default More surface for dry lanes?

So, it seems that my local bowling center only oils the lanes before leagues. Annoying, but ok I guess.

So, when looking for advice on adjusting to dry lanes, I saw that it’s common to add more surface to the ball.

Can anyone explain this for me? Wouldn’t my ball burn up even more, with a lower grit surface?

Yes, your ball would burn up even more with more surface. Simple explanation: less oil means more friction and more surface means more friction; more friction plus more friction equals disaster. Unfortunately, many wannabe experts seem to believe that more surface is the cure for everything. Sometimes a little polish can do wonders!

From what I read I am pretty sure that this is not the case, but something to be addressed anyway; just make sure that when you are reading these pieces that people are not confusing dry lanes with short oil and vise versa.

The sport pattern league I'm currently in I have heard a few people call Cheetah (the 33 foot version) as a dry condition.
