    Never understood why many bowling centers don't own the land and building.

    Agreed. I was confused when the owner stated that he wanted to pass the business down. Considering he has a landlord, I didn't understand how he could reasonably assume his situation couldn't change.

    Around here, the value of commercial property so high that you would have to be very wealthy put up a center and buy the land that it sits on. Most people with that kind of money think in terms of maximizing return on investment. They think that if a bowling center yields a profit of X dollars per square foot, and a retail building yields a profit of 2X dollars per square foot, they would be losing X dollars per square foot by putting up a bowling center.
