    Default 2019 USBC Open Championships

    Has anyone already gone??

I am heading to Vegas on Saturday and bowl on Sunday for team event and Monday for Doubles and Singles.

Hoping that my targeting improvements over this past league season translate into a better performance for me on the lanes.

I will also be doing some of the side tournaments while there. Bowlers Journal for sure, have to make my donation and get my magazine subscription renewed for the next year LOL!. Also the 40 Frame Game which I have done really well in the past several years.

I'm not going to be able to go this year - the newborn is still a little too young for me to justify leaving for 4 days for a bowling tournament (it seems as though every year I miss is Vegas). Have heard a few things from reliable sources this year - as with last year you do not need to burn out a bump spot/build the pattern, there is already plenty of recovery and teams that have done the old school surface up the outside have actually created an "over wall". Lots of medium core, medium cover equipment at the start and transition into the adjustments. Urethane appears to have a good look, but the reaction/carry is as good as it appears.
Currently in the arsenal: Roto Grip Hyper Cell (@2000), Hammer Gauntlet Fury (@1000 polished), Roto Grip Idol (@2000), Storm IQ Tour Emerald (@1500 polished), Storm Phaze 4 (@1500 polished), Hammer Cherry Vibe (@1500 polished), Hammer Black Widow Urethane (@1000), Jet Blackbird

    Congrats to you!!

Too bad you will miss a year, but certainly for good reason. Yeah, I am deciding on whether to take my new urethane as part of my 6 ball arsenal. I bought specifically for sport patterns, so I guess I probably should take it. LOL!!

Last year, I had no issue with my ball hooking, it was hooking too much to be honest. My heavier surfaced balls were the ones that I ended up not even using.

Working with my pro shop tomorrow to finalize.
Have too many good choices and it certainly is making me second guess decisions at this point, but I am thinking the following for my arsenal this year:

Storm Crux Prime for Traction at 2000 grit
Roto Grip Idol Solid for Continuous at 2000 grit
Roto Grip Idol Pearl for Angular at 4000 grit
Roto Grip Hustle Ink for Continuous at 4000 polish
Storm Fever Pitch for Traction at 2000 grit
    Spare ball

I keep going between my Hustle INK and Storm Physix. Storm Physix, the way I have it laid out, is a smooth rolling ball and isn't jumpy for me and is very controllable.

Slight change to my arsenal for Vegas:

Storm Crux Prime at 1500 grit
    Storm Physix at 2000 grit
Roto Grip Idol Pearl 3000 grit and Trucut polish
    Roto Grip Idol 3000 grit
    Storm Fever Pitch 2000 grit

Lastly deciding on either of the following 2:
Roto Grip Hustle INK at 4000 grit
Roto Grip Hyper Cell Fused at 3000 grit and Trucut polish

Thoughts on which of the 2 last ones to include?

Decided after practice and league session last night that I would use my Fever Pitch as my spare. Worked really well and was able to pick up any and all combinations when I straightened my hand. I think using my Fever Pitch as my spare ball gives me an extra ball I can take and use for not just my spare ball

Back from Vegas and nothing really great to report unfortunately.

Really struggled with the Team pattern this year. Team event is usually one of my better events and I just made so many bad shots and so many chopped spares it was embarrasing.

Team started out OK with my Storm Physix - 3-6 on first ball and converted it. 3-6 on next shot and I chopped the 3 off on the conversion. Split leaving 6-7-10, struck, 4 pin, split again 2-10, strike, 3-6-9-10 converted, strike, and 6-10 in 10th frame which I proceeded to chop the 6 off and only a 151 to start out my nationals competition. Changed balls half way through game to Crux PRime, still searching for a good look.

Next game was just as bad as the first and I classify this as a literal Dumpster Fire.

Game 2 - 3-6 to start and again chopped 3 off of it, strike, another 3-6 and you can see the trend being repeated and again chopping the 3 off of it, 10 pin, greek church, 1-2-4-10 did not convert, 6-9-10, did not convert, 2-5, strike and 4-7 in 10th frame for a absolutely pathetic and embarassing 121. Just completely frustrated at this point and making multiple ball changes to get some kind of good look.

Game 3 I just wanted to get my self settled down and make some kind of good shots. Started with 6-10 and chopped the 6 off of it. 6-10 again and converted(finally!!), strike, 6 pin, 10 pin(missed it), strike, 6-10 converted, 6 pin, 10 pin, strike and 3-6-10 to finish out the event with 175.

151-121-175 = 447 - Yikes!! My lowest 3 game set of any of my performances anywhere let alone in Nationals.

After my terrible performance at Team event, I went to bowl the Bowlers Journal which is also held at the South Point center. Now, the pattern that is put down is the Doubles/Singles pattern, since it is in a different side of the center, it will play differently than in actual event. Having put any negativity aside that I was feeling from my performance, I just went in to it with a fresh mind.

Game 1 using my Crux Prime I was able to put some nice shots together. Double to start, 2 pin, turkey, 4 pin, got too fast leaving bucket and did not convert, 6 pin, 3 pin, 7 pin in fill for a good start of 211.

Game 2 continued with the Crux Prime, strike to start, super washout 1-2-4-6-10 did not convert, strike, 9 pin, strike, 2-8, 1-2, strike, 10 pin, 3-6-10 and strike in fill for a 179.

Game 3 started with strike, 10 pin and I whiffed it, double, 3-6-10, 2-8-10, double, 6-10, strike, 3-6 in the fill for a 186.

    211-179-186 = 576

Not a cashing score by any means, but a much needed confidence boost. Was able to make shots and got a little bit more comfortable with my game again and prove to myself that I can actually convert some spares.

    Doubles event:

Started with Crux Prime and had a pretty good look. The shot of course did play differently from Bowlers Journal but gave me a good starting point.

    Game 1 strike, 7 pin, 4 pin, 2-4-10, 3-6-10, 3-6(converted it YAY!!), double, 10 pin, 2-4-10 in 10th for a 178

Game 2 strike, 6-10, 2-4-10, double, greek church, 1-2-8-10(converted), 3-10, strike and 3-9 in 1th for a not so good game of 154

Game 3 Started to make a big move with my feet and went 3 and 3 left. Double to start, 4-9 split, 4 pin, 3-6-10, ran off the next 5 before a bit high and a bad break of another 4-9 split to end with a nice 230.

178-154-230 = 562, My partner ended with a 563 so we were at 1125 for our Doubles.

Singles event and I just wanted to continue making shots.

Game 1 stuck with Crux Prime and struck to start, 6 pin, turkey, 3-6, 1-2-10, 4 pin(whiffed), 4 bagger to finish out with a 211.

Game 2 Double to start, 10 pin(missed), double, 9 pin, double, 4-7-9 and then made another move 3-3 left again, doubled in 10th with 2-4-5 in fill for a 208

Game 3 started out a bit high with yet another 3-6, 8 pin, 6-10, 7 pin, strike, 4 pin, 6 pin, 7 pin, strike, 7 pin, 9 pin in the fill for a clean game and a 193 to finish my time on the lanes.

211-208-193 = 612 to sort of redeem myself.

1621 All events score which is just OK. Not a cashing one, but I think Singles should cash for a little bit on the low end.
