    Default Tournament tomorrow night

Our center is having a tournament tomorrow. 80% of 220 handicap so should help lower average guys like me. We have a bunch of guys that average over 220 so they will be bowling scratch basically where I should be getting about 25 pins so I need to bowl at least about 200 to be competitive. Supposed to be a THS pattern, probably 40-42' if I had to guess. Minimum $600 first place. We will see how it goes. Hopefully I can do decent. We will be moving a pair right every round so we won't be on the same pair all night. No pressure though. I have no expectations and just going in to have fun.

Lately I have been starting pretty strong then falling off so need to be better at adjusting to the transition. Will update with results

Best of luck and try to have fun!

I have stopped bowling local house tournaments. Used to be something I would do weekly as there is usually a tournament locally each week. There has been an influx of "non-local" bowlers coming in from outside associations as well as regional PBA members participating in no-tap tournaments, handicap house shot tournaments, or other fun format tournaments. It is kind of frustrating to go in, bowl very well, only to lose to a PBA card holder who bowls 1200 across 4 games of a no-tap tournament and then wipes the floor with other bowlers during the finals. The other "non-local" bowlers come in with 180-190 averages, but consistently average 230-240 at our house. Coincidence or "average management"? Who knows, but kind of suspicious. I had a handful of top 3 finishes but finally decided the hundreds of dollars spent on entry fees would be better spent elsewhere.

In any event, I tend now to only bowl in state or county tournaments because it is just more exciting. The local house tournaments are always the same exact people, and while you develop a camaraderie with those bowlers it becomes more like a league than a tournament environment. There have been a couple of new tournaments here recently that I really wanted to try at a center about an hour down the road, but for some reason they have been during the evening mid-week which is really difficult to get to. Might get the chance one of these days...who knows.

No offense intended but 80% handicap based on 220 when there are bowlers entered with averages over 220 only helps the guys over 220. If you’re averaging 190 you’ll get 24 pins of handicap. If you bowl 200, or 10 pins over your average, a guy with a 230 average can be five pins under average and still beat you.
Sounds like you have the right attitude going in. Just bowl, have fun, and hope you put some big numbers up there.
    Bowl well and good luck!

Yeah I thought about that later...lol. But I ended up doing alright. Will start a new post for it

So just got home. 45 entrants and top 11 made the cut. They never mentioned the pattern but it didn't seem any different than our regular league. Maybe a little shorter or longer but very close.

There were 4 of us to a pair and we had a 4 game qualifier with the top 11 making the cut. Started the first game with the Uppercut around the 7 board and coming around the ball. Had some trouble and tried a few adjustments. Ended up staying behind the ball more and started hitting good. Left 2 splits in a row that game that really hurt. Moved 2 pairs up and started hitting the pocket nicely. Game 3 and 4 I started missing my mark and my spares. Game 4 I switched to the Glam to calm down the reaction. In the end I missed the cut by 24 pins. I ended up 99 over and 11th place was 123 over. I also entered brackets but somehow they missed me so I was only in the jackpot. Jackpot was 289 and I had 271 (243 scratch plus my 28 handicap). They refunded my $10 for the 2 brackets they missed me on.

So I am out $55 but had fun. I finished tied for 14th out of 45 (top 11 made the cut). So did better than I thought I would. They had the cut line on the monitors after each game. After game 3 the high scratch was 740 and the cutoff was +99. At that time I was +89 so I was in the running. Missing 2 7 pins in the last game killed me.

EDIT: Just remembered I took a pic of the final qualifier results. High scratch series was 1002 (1002 with handicap), 1000 (1004 with handicap), and 960 (996 with handicap). Totals with handicap were 1029, 1023, 1004, and 1002

So the top qualifier had a 187 average, followed by 190, 218, and 220. Our PSO and the owner did not enter but were there. Highest book averages entered were 233, 230, 221, and 14 with a 220 average...lol. I didn't get the bottom 8 bowlers in the pic so there may have been some others in there.

I didn't stick around to see the actual tourney with the top 11 so not sure how that went.

You don’t need me to point out that had you made all your 7 pins you would have made the cut.

Nope. No need to point that out. Already saw that...lol. But almost made the 4-6-8-10, which would have been a perfect 7 pin spare...lol. I was doing great with 7 pins for a few weeks and now just lost it. One of them just brushed it to the inside, one missed inside about 1" and one I missed my mark at the arrows by about 2 or 3 boards and missed inside by about a foot. Oddly, if I leave a 4-7 I can usually get it or if I do miss it's to the outside right where I should be aiming for the 7. But just the 7 and I struggle. The last few weeks I seem to have 1 good game and 3 near my average.

Fall league starts next week and we are now a mixed league and wife decided to bowl so should be interesting.

Do you mean a bowler under the age of 18, or do you call anyone more than five years younger than you a kid?

I used to work for someone who did the latter. It always seemed funny to hear him refer to someone in their sixties or seventies as a kid.
