    Default Teams are crushing us

So we have 10 teams in our league. We have the 3rd highest scratch total and 2nd highest handicap total but we are in 9th place of 10 teams. We also have the 2nd lowest handicap total. Lowest team has a 103 handicap and ours is 105.

Example: Last night we bowled a mediocre team. We were giving them 115 pins per game. We have the 2nd highest scratch game (1070) and highest scratch series (3075) yet we still lost all 3 games, the first 2 by over 100 pins.

yeah - we had a similar issue.

Turns out part of it was my father-in-law actually COACHING our opponents so they pretty consistently bowled over their average and kicked our butts. Never could get him to stop that! LOL Made us popular but . . .

It's near the beginning of the season. How were your league averages calculated? In the long run, high averages always trump high handicaps unless the handicap is based on 100% or higher.

We use the previous seasons average for the first 9 games unless you had no USBC average then it's calculated after 3 games. We did have 2 or 3 guys on our team that had no averages but they had bowled higher than their average so far. The other team is the same guys as they have always had so they all had averages but they just bowled out of their butts that night...lol.

Our averages are based on 90% of 230 so high percentage but the higher averages still have an advantage. Our summer league is 80% so even a bigger advantage for higher averages.

I am amazed at the number of leagues using individual handicaps. That is unheard of around here in the 30 years I have been bowling on leagues. We always just use a percentage of the difference between the two teams averages.

It makes sense if you are bowling head to head with handicap. But would make more sense to base handicap off of the higher average bowler instead of a 230 or something. In this area head to head bowling only exists on scratch leagues.

Our summer league is team handicap but it is only 2 man teams. It's 80% of the difference. But our winter league is individual. Oddly our stat sheets don't show individual handicaps but the tally sheet does and that's where we get the numbers from.

Here is my teams stat sheet. Only shows total pins, number of games, averages, etc

Well we finally didn't run up against a team of buzzsaws...lol. They are actually the 2nd highest average team in the league (we are 3rd highest). We lost the first game by 8 then won the 2nd by 9 then won the 3rd by 25 so 3 pretty close games. We did struggle a little with scratch scores of 1049, 989 and 982 to their 1091, 1014 and 991.

Lanes we slick. I missed 2 7 pins cause my T-Zone slid right off the edge where normally it would have held so then I moved 2 boards left to lessen my angle and be more conservative with it. Another lefty on the other team that is a 225 bowler missed a few 7's tonight too and said the same thing I did. No hold on the edge.

Horrible night. No oil. There is an older guy with a 159 average that bowled a 234 against us. We lost that game. But just another instance of a guy crushing us
