Default rules question on book average for new bowler

So tis is my sons first year bowling league. There is a 40/40 tournament this Sunday that we were going to enter together. Talked to the owner last night and since it's my sons first year and he only has 15 games he has to bowl scratch? He has a 120 average and we stand no chance at all with that big of a deficit.
Is this accurate? He has to bowl scratch cause he has less than 21 games in?

Typically there is an entering average for those without book averages who are entering a league.

For a TOURNAMENT, though, if he doesn't have the minimum number of games or a book average, yeah, that's what I've seen. He gets to go scratch.

yeah - it's one reason why my wife and I jumped on to a sanctioned league as opposed to the "fun" non-sanctioned one we were on. Only cost us a few bucks a week plus sanction fees, and now we can bowl sweetheart leagues, nationals, whatever.

So we are bowling tomorrow. My son is averaging 120 after 15 games but will be bowling scratch so I know we will have no chance and will likely finish in last place but he wants to do it for the father/son thing.

Enjoy this while you can. I bowled on the same team with my dad from 1975 until he quit bowling in 2009. When I started the team roster included two brothers who were friends of my dad, my cousin Eddie who was 18 years older than me, and my cousin Bob, who was my dad’s cousin’s son.

Well that didn't go well...lol. But was worth it. I struggled. 3 game qualifier while jumping 5 pairs after each game. First game I had 147, son had 80. 2nd game I had 203 and son had 123. 3rd game I had 192 and son had 165ish (his best ever). We got 57 pins handicap (19/game for me, 0 for him). We ended with like 967 with handicap. Cutoff after first squad was about 1308. We didn't stay for 2nd squad but there were 100 teams there between both squads. Winning team won $2000. I used the Zen Soul all 3 games except the 2nd half of game 2 used the Helios and struck 6 out of the 7 frames I threw it (had 73 in 5th frame and ended with 203)

as long as you had fun, that's honestly what matters.

I started, a long time ago, to compare tournaments or whatever to, like, going to a movie or something. A couple of hours of time spent with a loved one, doing something we both enjoy . . . worth it!
