Barnes Wins PBA “Extreme Swing” Points Title
    Seattle, Wash. - 3/25/2009

With back-to-back victories in the Don Johnson Buckeye State Eliminator in Columbus, Ohio, and the Go RVing Match Play Championship in Norwich, Conn., Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, locked up an easy victory in the five-tournament Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour “Extreme Swing” points race, earning a berth in the GEICO PBA Team Shootout hosted by Six Flags set for June 11-14 in Jackson, N.J.

Also advancing to the GEICO PBA Team Shootout were the next seven players in Extreme Series points: Bill O’Neill, Southampton, Pa.; Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo.; Mike Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas; Mike Wolfe, New Albany, Ind.; Michael Fagan, Patchogue, N.Y.; Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., and Patrick Allen, Wesley Chapel, Fla.

Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, finished among the top eight, but had previously earned a berth in the PBA Team Shootout as Versatility Swing points champion.

The Extreme Swing, part of the PBA’s 50th Anniversary season, also included the Ultimate Scoring Championship where Barnes finished 39th, the GEICO Plastic Ball Championship (third), and the Etonic Marathon Open (fifth).

While the Extreme Swing points race is over, there is plenty of high-pressure competition yet to come as the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour heads into its final two events of the regular season.

Heading into next week’s 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open in North Brunswick N.J., four GEICO PBA Team Shootout spots will be decided based upon Grand Slam Series points. Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., heads that points list followed by Steve Jaros of Yorkville, Ill.; Sean Rash of Wichita, Kan., and Danny Wiseman of Baltimore. Barnes, Allen and Scroggins also are among the Grand Slam leaders, but they have already clinched spots.

Barnes’ back-to-back titles also put him back into the PBA Player of the Year points race with two tournaments to go. Malott is the leader with 74 points followed by Duke with 58, Barnes with 53, Allen with 48 and Williams with 36. A win in this week’s Bowling Foundation Long Island Classic is worth 16 points (8 for second) while a win in the U.S. Open is worth 24 points (12 for second). The top four in each tournament earn points, and the top 10 in the Player of the Year points chase will earn spots in the new King of Bowling Powered by Amp Energy special event set for early April at the Kegel Training Center in Lake Wales, Fla.

Finally, the battle for exemptions to bowl on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour next season is coming down to the wire. As the PBA Tour heads for AMF West Babylon Lanes in West Babylon, N.Y., for this week’s Bowling Foundation Long Island Classic, the points “cut” to earn an exemption for the 2009-10 season was 37th place because three players below the cut line also are exempt. Doug Kent and Michael Haugen Jr. are exempt based upon their victories in the 2007 Denny’s PBA World Championship and PBA Tournament of Champions, respectively, and John Nolen won both the PBA Regional Players Invitational and the USBC Masters.
