LAS VEGAS - There was a battle for the Regular Team lead at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on Sunday night, and experience prevailed as Linds Limited of Milwaukee grabbed the top spot with a 3,449 team total.
The group, which has collected 11 titles in 141 years of USBC Open Championships experience, proved it is still as competitive as ever with games of 1,081, 1,216 and 1,152 at Cashman Center. Turbo 2-N-1 Grips 1 of Madison, Wis., previously held the Regular Team lead with 3,403.
Lennie Boresch Jr. paced Linds Limited with a 743 series, which included the second perfect game of his 28-year tournament career. He was followed by Dale Traber (716), Gary Daroszewski (696), Ryan Lever (667) and Gus Yannaras (627). Boresch's 300 was the 11th of the 2009 event.
Traber, who became an exempt player on the Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association Tour following his appearance at the Open Championships in 2005, made his return to the team after a three-year absence.
"It was a pleasure to have Dale back, and that made a huge difference for me personally because he's one guy I can really relate to, and his incredible competitiveness helps bring that out in the rest of us," said Boresch, who also rolled a 300 game at the 1989 event in Wichita, Kan. "From what I heard about the lane condition, I thought 3,400 was a big number, but we really turned it on at the end, and we got there."
The team's experience shined through down the homestretch as it bounced back from a few late open frames and threw 12 of a possible 15 strikes in the final frame to lock up the lead.
"We picked each other up the whole night because that's what a team does," Boresch said. "We've been doing this a long time. We could've put our heads down, but we helped each other out and rallied back."
Seven lanes away, Sack Toe of Sacramento, Calif., was trying to erase a 62-pin deficit after two games and surge past Linds Limited, but fell short in the 10th frame and finished with 3,427 on games of 1,097, 1,138 and 1,192.
Robby Callan led the way for Sack Toe with a 767 series, which included 17 strikes in a row at one point. He was followed by Tim Hill (719), Robby Porter (671), Chris Pitts (660) and Doug Wilcox (610). Together, Sack Toe has combined for 46 years at the Open Championships.
"The core of our group has been together for a while, and we always knew we had a chance if we could all put something together at the same time," Wilcox said. "We saw the Lind's guys in the squad room, and we knew they could put up a big number. It was fun to see us go shot for shot, and they're a top team, so we can't be upset about finishing right behind them."
Daroszewski and Yannaras, the 1989 Regular Doubles champions, each celebrated tournament milestones with their 30th and 25th tournament appearances, respectively. Daroszewski also is a member of the 1982 and 1983 Team All-Events champions and teamed up with Yannaras, Traber, Boresch and Steve Brinkman to win the event again in 2000.
Lever, who also celebrated his 30th tournament appearance this year, teamed up with Traber to win Regular Doubles in 1999 and took Traber's spot on the Linds Limited roster when he accepted his Tour exemption.
Upon Traber's return, Brinkman elected to move to the group's companion team, which includes Jeff Nimke, who is the 1993 Regular All-Events champion and a member of the 1998 Regular Team champions. Brinkman also rolled an 805 series to help his team to the 1994 Regular Team title.
On Sunday, Brinkman posted a 676 series and led Red Carpet lanes to a 3,140 team total. Nimke added 658 and was followed by Scott Helm (621), Dave Beres (593) and Chad Maas (592).
Also this weekend, Archie Jones of Portland, Ore., and Robert Burkeybile of Silvis, Ill., each came within one shot of perfection on the tournament lanes, but they both left the 4 pin standing after 11 consecutive strikes.
Jones' near-perfect effort came in his final game of singles after games of 150 and 186. He finished with a 635 series and added 605 in doubles and 538 in team for a 1,778 all-events effort.
Burkeybile's 299 came between games of 200 and 191 for a 690 doubles series, and he added 708 in singles and 617 in team for 2,015.
