    Default New discovery....(partial)

I've discovered why my wrist has started hurting during games....My spare ball for some reason my thump keeps swelling and I havent been able to get to the proshop to have it opened up so when Im shooting for my spares....I try to flatten out my wrist and throw my hotauce and well that is when all my issues start surfacing. How do you guys who dont bowl with a plastic or spare ball hit those pesky 10 pin(righteys) I've also noticed that I am losing alot of speed in my release due to a blistered thumb (no brainer) but when I let the ball down in my release my forearm seems to hold up the follow through and I overrev without the speed . My biggest problem with me being new is I think I need some coaching and none of my gear is working for me right now with bad fitment....(It fits when I have it tweaked then when I want to throw, its too snug). So I think I will be upgrading to some of those "it"'s I believe they are called......

Next, what do you guys do to condition your finger inserts....Mine seem to be getting a little tacky and my fingers have been getting a little sore while throwing....The balls are not very old so It' not time to change them, but I would really like to have some sort of imput. I don't know many tips of the trade

I appreciate all the help Ive received thus far, so this is my go to place for imput! Thank you kindly, -donny

Donny, what i have experienced over the years is to have my thumb hole drilled slightly larger than I need it. My thumb swells and shrinks quite a bit. I carry tape with me and use it to customize my thumb hole every night. Many nights I add tape to start the night, and as the night progresses I have to remove some. Other nights I have to remove a piece or 2 and I'm good to go.

As far as your finger grips are concerned, I don't know of anything that will "condition" them. As a kid when I was taking guitar lessons, I didn't practice as I should. The strings made my fingers hurt. Once I told the teacher this fact, he suggested I soak my fingers in alcohol (the rubbing kind not the drinking kind). It worked. Maybe what you need to do is toughen up your fingers. The alcohol trick may work for you.

you could also try a different kind of grip.. some colors are actually softer than others.. like the clear ones for example seem to be the softest and like black tend to be a little stiffer.. thats just me personally.. also maybe a different grip company (vise or turbo)... If that doesnt work you could change to oval grips which are a more comfortable grip than the lift/power lift grips.. the ovals would be the opposite side of the grips most likely..

One thing I've always preached is never get fitted for a ball when you've just walked into the bowling center. I always roll at least 2 games, sometimes 4 before I ever get close to getting any thumb work done. By that time my fingers have gone thru whatever changes they're going to go thru, and I feel like I get a more accurate representation about what my thumb dimensions need to be. This is especially true during the wintertime when most people's hands are smaller.

I like this advice, What I do now tho is Get my thumb hole a little big very little,
Then when i bowl my first game or two I use a good Rosin bag every shot till my thumb swells, then stop using the bag.

well Unfortunately due to blistering I'll have to wait to roll another ball and that sucks because I just got my venom and widow spare ball in and now i have to look at them, just sitting there.....waiting! The proshop guy told me the fingertips will wear as time progresses and it will also toughen up my fingers! I guess what is frustrating me so much is I can get my fingers and thumb in my hotsauce all the time but as i bowl 7-10 games, its just way too much ball for the lanes. I havent learned how to do my spares with a strike ball yet either and that is also a very large problem I am having. I know strikes for show, spares for dough....I just cant get it to work yet. I am going to try so very furiously to get some lessons and hopefully progress even further!

dpmusic70, that alcohol trick was from back in the 60's. It sounds strange, but it worked for me. Too bad I lost 1/2 of my left index finger in an accident in 74. I haven't played the guitar since. My old Fender Mustang is still in its case under my bed.
