Team GEICO Clinches Championship Round Berth in GEICO PBA Team Shootout
    Jackson, NJ - 7/5/2009

JACKSON, N.J. (July 5, 2009) - With one Baker-format match remaining, Team GEICO (Chris Barnes, reigning PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott, Patrick Allen, Mika Koivuniemi, Mike Wolfe and Brad Angelo) clinched a berth in the GEICO PBA Team Shootout Hosted by Six Flags championship round with a 5-2 record.

After 11 total matches in round-robin competition, Team Lumber Liquidators (Parker Bohn III, Walter Ray Williams Jr., Pete Weber, Norm Duke, Steve Jaros and Mike Scroggins) and Team Bayer (Tommy Jones, Rhino Page, Michael Fagan, Bill O’Neill, Sean Rash and Jason Belmonte) are battling for the second spot with 3-4 and 3-5 records, respectively.

In a dramatic Week 3 match, Team GEICO defeated Team Bayer, 233-229, but had to sweat out a comeback attempt by Team Bayer which took advantage of the “Endless 10th Frame” bonus. Down by 58 pins going into the 10th frame, Team Bayer struck out in the 10th to earn the bonus and then struck four more times, failing on a fifth attempt to fall four pins short of rallying to victory.

The Endless 10th Frame gives a team that is trailing a chance to catch up. It must first throw a strike on its final shot in the 10th frame, and then it can continue throwing shots as long as each is a strike. Each bonus strike is worth 10 points. If the opposing team loses its lead, it can then try to rally in its own “Endless 10th Frame.”

After surviving its match with Team Bayer, Team GEICO defeated Team Bayer two more times, 245-205, and 224-174, in the round-robin series to clinch its championship round berth. GEICO’s only loss came at the hands of Team Lumber Liquidators, 211-152.

Team Bayer faced Team Lumber Liquidators three times in Week 3, winning two matches, 212-183, and 237-217, but losing the other, 193-186.

In next Sunday’s final series of ESPN telecasts, Team GEICO will bowl Team Lumber Liquidators in the final round-robin match. That match will determine whether Team Lumber Liquidators or Team Bayer will advance to the championship round spot to battle Team GEICO in a series of singles, doubles and Baker-style team matches. The winning team will split a first-place prize of $108,000 - $18,000 per team member.

The final round-robin match and the championship round will air on ESPN on Sunday, July 12, starting at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Is anyone else amazed at the number of simple spares that are being missed on these telecasts?
