Thread: Opposite Arm

    Default Opposite Arm

A bowler asked me for help. On the second step, the opposite arm goes behind the back with the bowling ball. I am drawing a blank on how to fix it. Any suggestions?

One of the best ways to keep the trailing arm back, but even with your shoulders.

Is to do this have the thumb of your non bowling hand turned down and pointed slightly toward the approach behind you.

This will help lock your arm and keep your shoulder from rotating and help keep your balance in check.

When you watch the pro's on Tv keep a eye out for them doing this.

Another method is to have the non-ball arm point toward the target (again, with the thumb pointing down). As the ball comes forward toward the release point, the opposite arm acts as a balancing pendulum swinging backwards.

The days of "ball, fall, wall" are pretty much at an end.

I brought away from the article keeping the shoulder forward, thumb down, and basically pointing toward your target on the lanes.

Pre-release, if the bowler opens the shoulder in the back swing, yes. As the shoulder closes, the non-bowling arm will generally move back so that it is perpendicular to the target line. Tommy Jones is a good example of this.
