Well Kurt I don't know what your disability is, but bowling is a great motivator in any case. And I think you'll find that bowlers are in general a rather friendly group of people, so keep it up, and have fun.
I have been bowling 4 days a week for 4 weeks giving bowling a serious undertaking for social, fun and personal growth reasons. I am thoroughly enjoying the game. I know there are times where I will do bad and the times I do good really last. I purchased a Storm Natural to get me started, 12 pounds with a conventional drill and some shoes and a tote bag. Accessories include a scuff brush, rosin bag, towel and some general ball cleaner. I also have a first aid kit I put together, everything including fish food (yes, that's right - my little joke I play on people).
My coach asked me what pound ball I was using this past Saturday and told him 12. He said I could use a heavier ball say 14. So Sunday I ordered a 14 pound ball, delivered and drilled today and I must say it has made a big difference on my control. In this case an ounce of prevention is worth two pounds of cure and $130.
I have already made up my mind about the money I spent. It was a good lesson but that 12 pound ball helped me gain strength in my arm due to 10 years of complete inactivity. I spent that amount of time behind a computer playing games and hardly getting out (I'm disabled).
But bowling is killing the coach potato in me as well as the junk food glutton. I have cut my soda drinking by 90% drinking only water with one can of 12oz soda a day. I get 10 hours of sleep a day and go to bed at 11pm (vs 3am). I have lost 6 pounds from my body and feel energetic and lively. I am getting around people more and am starting to feel comfortable in my own skin.
Personally I think the $130 is nothing when it comes to good physical, mental and emotional health. Gladly well spent!

P.S. Sorry for the misleading thumbs down icon, I just wanted to get your attention harmlessly

What I always say "LUCK IS EARNED"
Hello Owlish,
I too are in the same boat as you. I started Bowling a few months ago and have undergone a makeover so to speak. I STOPED my unhealthy COD MW2 XBOX habit. I started drinking Diet Sodas and gotten out of the house two to three times a week Bowling. I have lost a little weight, read more "Bowling Books", and made a few more friends. I start League in May and look forward to my Practice time. I`m purchasing a new Ball soon "Heavy Oil" and will have a couple of more Lessons before League starts. This Bowling thing is fun huh? Have a good one...
To help the practice games cost go a little further, check your local lanes for coupons giving you 2 games for the price of 1 during the summer.

I've seen people shoot only 7 and 10 pins a game for practice. Is shadow bowling still used?
