Match Point Team Payouts

Curious for anyone that has a team in a Match point league, where you get points for individual performance as well as team.

My question is how does your team pay out the prize money at the end of the season?

We just finished in second place, and paid out each person equally. I was talking to anothe team that split the money per individual point one, and split the remaining team points won equally.

I brought this up to my team so that we can make a decision by the time we start bowling for our summer league in a few weeks. My opinion is that it rewards the people that do their part by winning their individual competition, while still helping the overall team points. It also would keep someone that gets behind in their game from giving up and letting someone that is beating their person from "carrying" them for the team game. In our 40 point per week format, each person can win 6 points (1 point for each game one, and 3 points for individual series), where the team can win 16 points as a whole (4 points for each game and overall series).

I may look like a greedy person from when I brought it up, because out of 102 individual points that could be earned in our last half, I earned 91 points to lead the league. One teammate brought up that with his place in the order (order is determined by highest handicap to lowest), that he may bowl against someone that does well that week and be at a disadvantage. My response was that anyone's competition could bowl above average at anytime, and that we all should be able to improve each week to combat that.

We've always left individual awards to the individual and split the team awards evenly (or by % based on weeks bowled) amongst the team members.

It's nice if team individuals want to split their winnings with the rest of the team, but they shouldn't be obligated to do so unless agreed upon before the start of the season.

Having said that, I'm not crazy about giving away monetary awards to individuals in team leagues, but that's just me.

Maybe I confused what I wanted to know by all I put. Individuals still get their own awards (i.e. game, series, average awards), and we split any team awards for place money and other awards. My question is should the total number of points the team wins for the season that we are paid on be separated based on what each individual won and team wins divided equally?

This is an example I made for my team to decide on:

300 total points (100 team/200 individual)

If we paid per point per individual, and divided the team points equally, then payout could look something like this:

Bowler 1 has 50 points x $1/pt = $50 +$25 team =$75
Bowler 2 has 70 points x $1/pt = $70 +$25=$100
Bowler 3 has 40 points x $1/pt = $40 +$25 =$65
Bowler 4 has 40 points x $1/pt = $40 +$25 =$65

If all was divided equally in the example, then the per point payout would be $75 each. If paid out based on the points each person earns, then it could vary with some getting more, and some getting less.

On the match point leagues I've bowled on we divided the money evenly.

For what your suggesting you need to have a team with the right frame of mind, or else you'll wind up with bad feelings and maybe lose players.

That type of payout is something you'd find on a scratch team or very competitive hdcp league team. Where the team members are close in average and really work together and compete against each other .

Your idea that it would help make players try harder and not give up is valid enough ( Its similar to what we did this season, with having low man out.).

But this is were the right frame of mind comes in, some players will feel pressured into performing and they'll do worse. then at the end of the season when they get that small payout, they might not say it. but they wont like how the rest got more than they did.

I am on a very similiar matchplay league in the fall. My team is very competitive, and we have bowled together for 3 years. We split the money won by the team, evenly between team members. Our league pays out for individual points seperately if you are in the top in points in the league. I understand both sides of this argument, but I think that my team helps me win my individual points by supporting me, rooting me on, and giving advice. I am the best bowler on my team, and usually have the most individual points, but I still feel they deserve an even share of all of the team money.

i agree with daniel! i plan on being the best bowler on my team and i would want to split everything evenly with the team.

How does the league pay out for individual points seperately for being in the top in points?

I to believe my team helps me win points as well, but some on my team get the same encouragement, and do nothing with it. If I start bowling bad, I except ideas and adjust to the lanes to get the right spot. Others just try to force it, and if that doesn't work, blame the lanes.

If you don't feel like your team is good enough at adjusting, and it bothers you, get a new team. It sounds like you feel like you have to hold the team up, and that is not a positive environment for you or for them. I would find some new teammates if I were you. As for my league, we payout team finishing positions at a flat rate, a certain amount per team point and team high scores for team money. For individuals we pay for individual high scores, high averages (top 5), high individual match points(top 15), and the not so happy, low average award. This way, you make money for how well you make as a team, which includes each of your individual efforts, and then you as an individual could earn another ten weeks worth of lineage in individual prizes if you are high average and high match points. In our league that is about $160 (we pay $16 per week). This makes it so you will try to succeed as an individual, even if your team isn't doing well.

I feel I must defend myself with the beginning of your statement. I like my team, and we do well each season. Although we have to make a couple of replacements, two of us have been on the team since I started it a couple years ago. I did earn a vast majority of the points for our team this past season, but did not mind splitting the money evenly( I only considered this other option after another team mentioned that is how they slit it among their team). Since we started the match play league last summer, we have finished 1st, 3rd, and 2nd. Although The other person that has been with the team is the one I cannot seem to motivate to do better individually. We had found a way to replace him during the first half of the spring season by his wife wanting him to bowl only one league per week. Another member moved, and the sub he lined up ended up not being realiable, so I had to ask him to come back. We work together as well, so I find it better to try to motivate him to pull his weight so we can try to be in contention all season, than to tell him we don't want you to bowl if you cannot at least bowl your average each week. The other two members have felt the same way, so my stance is not the only one on the team.

I do like the idea for different payouts. I am secretary of the league as well, and have a little input for the payout options. We tend to provide options that are pretty similar, with just different amounts for each. Individual awards are only for high scratch game, high scratch series, the same for handicapped, and highest league average, separated for men and women. There are also team awards for the same categories. These amounts range between $30-45 for teams, and $10-15 for individual awards. The remaining price money is then divided among the teams on a per point basis. This past spring season, we had a total of 5,780 that paid $0.92 for each point the whole team had. Our team finished with 433 points, high handicapped game ($40), and second place ($75), for a total of $513.36 to be split among four members. So each person only received $128 for a 17 week season for finished second.

I will get a copy of it and email it to you on Monday or Tuesday. It isn't my favorite prize fund we have had, but it is a good one. We offer three options each year, and the one chosen is always the one that pays the most evenly. Most of the bad bowlers make sure you can't get too much money for being first. It will be a good option to give you some ideas for yours though.
