Default league operations stuff...bye teams....need help!

So I was elected as secretary/treasurer for this season....and the former secretary (instead of showing me what my duties are and how to do them) brought a box of crap over to my house and said "here ya go!"
So I'm kinda clueless at this point but slowly figuring things out.

I spent all day yesterday with some secretary software setting up my league and entering names and scores from last week....here's my problem:
    I currently have 9 teams....so I have to use a BYE team.
Only 1 bowler from my 9th team showed up...which we allow for a legal lineup. He had to bowl and his 2 teammates had to take absent scores which are their book averages from last year -10.

When bowling against a BYE team...the team has to bowl within 30 pins of their team average to win points.
Is their team average the average for that night? with 2 guys at -10? Or do I use their book averages regardless?

What is the correct way to set up my BYE team? I can't give them vacancy scores of 150 right? Do I have to change the BYE teams average and handicap each week accordingly?

You use the normal team average. The -10 pins don't figure into that, it just tells you what the players score is for each game.

    Example:
Say the 3 bowler's each have a 200 ave. the team ave. would be 600. So you would use 600 to figure win's and loss's. So if the team has to bowl within 30 pins of their team average to win points. the team would have to bowl a 570 or higher to win the game and 1710 or higher to win series.

As for the "BYE Team" it doesn't have a score or average or handicap. The team that plays against the "BYE" is playing like in a forfeit situation and just has to bowl within 30 pins of team average to determine wins.

I would suggest getting advice also from the local usbc assoc. and another league sec. Also go to bowl.com and download the USBC Rule book and the League Operations Handbook.

    click for League Operations Handbook

    click for League Operation Checklist.pdf

    click for Duties and Responsibilities

click for League Standing sheet for 9+Teams.pdf

    Heres from USBC rule book.
    104d. Uneven Number
When a league has an uneven number of teams, the team scheduled against the nonexistent team cannot be
credited with the points by forfeit. The Earn the Points system is used unless the league board of directors,
by majority vote, decides to use the Bye or Draw System. The following procedures apply for each system:
    1. Earn the Points:
    a. An individual must bowl at least his/her average less ten (10) pins and/or teams must bowl
at least the team average less ten (10) pins per player, unless the league board states
    another number.
    b. Points not won by the team for failing to bowl the prescribed score should be recorded on the
    standing sheet as “unearned” points.

    Default In my league

My league secretary came up with a great idea. Instead of bowling the "vacant team", you draw a number of another team in the league and basically bowl against them. Even though your not on the same pair. Works for us. It is better though to put it up to a vote. That way everybody will understand what is going on. It has worked for us for 2 years with no complaints. Good luck.

Awesome, thank you bowl1820....that's what I was kinda thinking...but then my mom and I got into a debate over it which just confused me further.

I'm thinking I will have to set something up with their team average in the BYE team in my software though...the BYE team can't win or lose points....but if said team wins points against the BYE then I need it to display their points won on the weekly standing sheets I print.

A bye team will usually show vacant scores for it's roster, even though the scores are completely meaningless. If you need to put anything, just put vacant bowlers

putting in a vacancy automatically gives the bowler a 150 ave and 54 hdcp...so I had to tweak those numbers accordingly, so that they had to bowl within 30 pins of their team average to win points.
Lucky for me, with week 2 out of the way....we filled 1 vacancy and picked up a 10th team....so I don't have to mess with the bye team anymore yay!
