piece of skin between the thumb and index kills me everytime i bowl with my hammer, span too long? any other thoughts?

It does sound like a span issue. Take the ball to your pro-shop and have them remeasure.

If you say it's the webbing between the thumb and index, it's most likely a bevel issue. But this could also be a span issue because the most stretched you are, the more bevel is required. It's all about what is comfortable to you. A shorter span with less bevel could be your thing, or stretched with more bevel. That'll come with trial and error.
