I'd start at 600 grit wet sand. Several of the old faball balls (Like the blue hammer, burgundy used 600 grit factory back then).

my bowling partner on my team picked up a red hammer urethane that was donated to the pro shop along with several other balls. he is having a problem with it as far as hooking and getting it into the pocket. i found one on bowlingball .com that is currently not available,which i think i know why. i shows that i came sanded but not with how much grit. where should i tell him to start at....maybe @1000? that would be my guess and then go from there.

that's a start. 600 seems like a lot but i guess back then,that's what we used. i was thinking that with the alley conditions now , that would be too much but it seems like a good starting point for him too and we can always go up from there.
You could start at 1000 abralon ok, 600 grit and 1000 abralon are very close in grit size.

thanks for that info and i passed that along to him. i was on bowlingball.com today to buy some abrolon4000 and 2000 for my bb's and they said that they are out of it. for some reason,i can't beleive that but that's what they said. what grit do you think that i could use instead. i usually go to auto parts store for my wet /dry papers and i think they go up to 800 and maybe1000. that should'nt be too much of a differance do you think?
This should be pretty close cross reference to the sizes.
4000 abralon = 3 micron = 1500 wet/dry
2000 abralon = 9 micron = 1000 wet/dry
1000 abralon = 18 micron = 600 wet/dry
500 abralon = 30 micron = 320 wet/dry
Now someone might tell you different or this is wrong , but abralon and sandpaper use different tolerance ranges. These are based on the how the sizes overlap. You can see this on my Bowlers grit chart.

You should be able to get 800 and 1000 ok, I use 800 grit paper all the time I got it at Autozone.
As a side note get a bottle of Soft Scrub (No Bleach), I use it for a super fine grit. A favorite surface i use is 800 grit followed by Soft Scrub on a sponage. It gives a nice sheen surface.

bowlingball.com has Siaair pads which are the same grit wise as Abralon and last much longer.
thanks for the chart andit will come in handy i'm sure. i know that it's also cheaper than abrilon pads. i also used baking soda mixed with small amounts of water way back then for a polish and a buffer but i will look into the one that you mentioned.
