Default Bowling's Clash of Champions to return in 2009

After a successful debut earlier this year, Bowling's Clash of Champions, a United States Bowling Congress event, will return in 2009, giving the sport prime exposure on network television once again.

The special made-for-television event, presented in cooperation with Strike Ten Entertainment, will take place April 30, 2009 at the USBC Convention in Reno, Nev., and will feature 16 champions from USBC events, the U.S. Open and the Professional Bowlers Association Player of the Year.

The Clash will be taped for broadcast on CBS Sports and is currently scheduled to air on Saturday, May 9 from 4-6 p.m. Eastern.

When the Clash debuted in May in Kansas City, Mo., it marked the return of bowling to network television for the first time since June 26, 1999, when the PBA's ACDelco All-Star Classic aired on CBS Sports.

"This year's Clash was a success in every way imaginable, and it was an easy decision to bring it back again in 2009," USBC Chief Operating Officer Kevin Dornberger said. "Our partnership with CBS Sports yielded one of the best bowling telecasts in recent memory. The unique format of the event led to compelling competition that delighted the crowd of USBC Convention attendees as well as an audience across the country."

Four lanes will be constructed on the floor of the Reno Events Center to host the competition. The specially constructed set will also play host to the championship round of the 2009 USBC Queens on April 29. The qualifying and match play portions of the Queens will take place at Reno's National Bowling Stadium from April 25-28.

Bowling's Clash of Champions will feature eight men and eight women ranging from teenagers to seniors who won their respective events during the 2008 calendar year. The players will battle for a $50,000 first-place prize and $100,000 overall prize pool.

The men's field will showcase U.S. Open champion Norm Duke, USBC Open Championships Regular All-Events titlist Jay Futrell, USBC Senior Masters winner Kenny Parks, USBC Team USA Trials champion Derek Eoff, U.S. Junior Amateur champion Geoffrey Young, USBC Youth Open all-events titlist Toby Sambueno and USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships winner Dan Vick. Since the USBC Masters was not held in the 2008 calendar year, PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes will take the eighth and final spot for the men.

Competing in the women's field is USBC Queens champion and defending Clash champion Lynda Barnes, U.S. Women's Open winner Kim Terrell-Kearney, USBC Women's Championships Classic All-Events titlist Liz Johnson, USBC Senior Queens winner Sandy Postma, USBC Team USA Trials champion Shannon O'Keefe, U.S. Junior Amateur champion Kristie Petravich, USBC Youth Open all-events titlist Rebekah Diers and USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships winner Jennifer Wright.

The Clash will be part of the USBC Convention, which brings the business and sport of bowling together. Industry leaders and stars of the game mingle with representatives from state and local associations and members from across the country in the true spirit of information sharing and determining the sport's future. Approximately 2,000 people are expected to attend the 2009 USBC Convention.

They talked a little about this yesterday on the Let's Go Bowling Show. And I agree with Ken; it'd be great to have Chris bowl Linda in the finals. The Barnes family seems to win all the trick events.
