Thread: too much hook?

    Default too much hook?

I just bought a vibe hammer ball, 12lb. I was using an old zone ball 10lb. I played a few games yesterday and I don't know if it is just me but the closest I can come to the pocket is hitting a brooklyn. I think it is the fact that im not used to a 12lb ball and I can't throw it hard enough yet? I also think im throwing it the wrong way and not bringing it back far enough. Is there any type of practice I could do.

There are two drills where you isolate your swing to get used to letting gravity do the work. Both involve standing just behind the foul line, ball side foot slightly behind the slide foot. One starts with the ball at your side and you swing the ball toward your target and then letting it swing back and then forward releasing the ball as it passes your slide foot ankle. The second starts with the ball waist high and being pushed out in line with the target. If you have ever seen the pro bowlers doing trick shot competitions these are very close to what Tony Reyes does with his one step delivery.

I would have been surprised if the new ball didn't hook considerably more than the 10# ball you were using. Your new Hammer Vibe ball actually has a performance type core in it. Your old ball was so light all the manufacturer could put in was a "pancake" type core. The Vibe will hit much harder both because of the core and the extra 2 pounds.

I seriously doubt that you are not throwing the ball fast enough. Remember you want a loose, free arm swing. Don't force yourself to throw it faster. All that will do is to create a muscled arm swing which leads to consistency problems.

Also, follow the advice of the posters above me. They know what they are talking about.
