My guess is that sanding to a coarser finish will make the ball grab the lane earlier and give more hook. The risk is in hooking too early and rolling out before reaching the pocket. This can be corrected by sanding with progressively finer grits , i.e. 2000, 4000, etc, until you find the right surface.
