A conventional grip is where the the fingers go in up to the second knuckle. In other words two thirds of each finger is in the hole. Most house balls are drilled for this way of gripping. Most serious bowlers will have their bowling balls drilled with a fingertip grip, only one third of each finger is in the hole.
Generally, the entire thumb is in the ball. the exception being those who don't put any part of the thumb in the ball.
