My mother is bowling again after many, many years away from it. She wants to get a new ball. She throws a very simple hook. She just wants to bowl for fun, no league. The local houses are usually pretty dried up. I was considering a urethane for her. Would that be a good choice?

That's what I was thinking. I told her I would get her one for mother's day. She's almost 70 and wants to just get out and have some fun, I don't think she needs a monster ball, lol.
I really don't like urethane for dry lanes for bowlers who don't have a lot of ball speed. They don't hook a lot, but they read the lanes pretty early. For open bowling where lanes have not been oiled recently, I think she's better off with plastic rather than urethane. I bowled two games this morning, only my second and third games since coming back after two months when I couldn't bowl, and shot 180-257 with plastic. On dry lanes without a lot of ball speed, you only have to be accurate to throw plastic and score.
i was thinking plastic but i'm not the expert here when it comes to ball selection.
another option might be the brunswick black rhino pearl. i got one for spares and it doesn't have much hook at all. our lanes are pretty wet though but it mostly rolls pretty straight for me

Oh, and LEFTY!!!
I would go plastic. Those that think urethane is just for dry lanes are severely mistaken.
I'd let her pick whatever she thinks is pretty from low end reactive to plastic it won't matter much

I guess it really comes down to what type of bowler is she? If she throws a straight ball no hook, then I wouldn't bother with a reactive ball. I would get something like a Storm Mix, it's a urethane spare ball. More durable than plastic but something that she can throw straight.
How about the Storm Mix? Is that a true urethane ball? Just curious because they seem fairly cheap.
