WHAT HAPPENED: Sean Rash scored 126 pins lower in the second round of qualifying than he did in the first, but he ended up on top after 14 games Wednesday as the field of 72 was cut to 28 for match play. Rash averaged 222.29 and totaled 3,112 pins, followed by Steve Jaros (3,077), Andres Gomez (3,069) and Brian Kretzer (3,045). They all earned a bye into the round of 16 at 3 p.m. today. The other 24 survivors face an elimination round of match play at 10 a.m.

OVERHEARD: "This is the first time I've ever been the qualifying leader after the final round," Rash said. "... I had some bad games in the second block, but everybody's going to have their bad games. You just want to stay out of trouble and keep the bad games to a minimum."

LOCAL CONNECTION: Tom Smallwood of Saginaw (19th) and Brian Waliczek of Birch Run (20th) advanced; John Nolen of Grand Blanc (48th) and Mika Koivuniemi of Hartland (37th) did not.

BIG JUMP: Walter Ray Williams Jr. moved from 40th to 23rd with a second-round block of 1,509.

    Women

WHAT HAPPENED: Kelly Kulick, the only woman ever to qualify as an exempt player on the PBA Tour, led with 3,033 pins as the field of 20 was cut to eight for match play.

LOCAL CONNECTION: Christine Bator of Warren was 19th at 2,697.

WHAT IF: Kulick would have finished eighth in the men's field, and the rest of the top eight -- Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, Lynda Barnes, Shannon Pluhowsky, Tammy Boomershine, Jodi Woessner, Diandra Asbaty and Liz Johnson -- would have made the men's cut. Michelle Feldman (ninth) also would have advanced.

Has anyone ever seen Andres Gomez throw? There's a couple of clips on Youtube but it's hard to tell if they're of the same guy bowling out on tour.

Kretzer amazes me after all these years...
