    Default WV Pepsi Youth Championships

My youngest daughter bowled in the state championships this weekend and won the scratch U12 division championships. The first three games they bowled were on Saturday on the Wall Street pattern. She averaged 154 for those games to qualify in first place over 24 other bowlers.

The field was then cut to the top 12 and they bowled on Sunday for the championship. They bowled three games on the Beaten Path pattern where she averaged 156 and qualified first. They cut the field to 8 shifted two lanes right and bowled 2 more games. My daughter qualified first again throwing 146-162 after shifting right again. The field was cut to 4 and she threw 187-133 but qualified second. They shifted lanes again and the championship roll off my daughter took the first game 167-129 and the second game she also won 169-128 for the championship.

I was extremely proud of her especially of the scores she shot bowing on a challenge pattern. The initial Wall Street pattern was known before hand and she had the opportunity to practice on but the Beaten Path pattern wasn't announced until the morning of the championships. She won a $250 scholarship, a new ball from Storm of her choosing, paid entry in the Jr. Gold Championships in Indiana $150 value, and she will receive expense reimbursement for the trip up to $500 for her first place finish.

I would also like to say how much I enjoyed working at this tournament over the last three weeks. I serve on the state youth board of directors and worked at this years tourney as a rules official and score keeper and can't believe what a positive experience it was. Getting to watch the kids as they progressed through the tournament and see young people who really care about bowling was truly an experience. All the way from watching the little 8 year olds have the first tournament chance to watching the U20 division where some kids that I have worked with over the last couple of years were bowling their final tournament was really special to me and something I won't ever forget.

I encourage all of you whether you have kids or not to get involved in your local youth association no matter what your capabilities if it is as a coach, volunteer, or simply someone who helps decorate the league boards or facebook/web pages get involved. All together the scratch and handicap tournaments handed out over $9000 in scholarships this year to young bowlers. We talk a lot about the decline in bowling and the problems with walled shots, well welcome yourself to a world where the sport is growing at least somewhat here with a strong tournament scene and bowlers actually learn to bowl on sport and challenge patterns without whining about their averages.

congrats to the kid. one of the best things they can do for the sport is have the juniors bowling on patterns. I wish i had that kid of opportunity.
