Bowling on PBA type oiling patterns
Can some of you please explain (to this old guy, lol here in So. Calif.) how to bowl on some of the oiling patterns that PBA members bowl on? Such as the Scorpion, Shark, Viper. From what I have seen that most bowlers play pretty close to the gutter on most of the patterns that are less than 37-38 ft of oil. Just kind of wondering.

For sure check out Youtube as Zothen suggested, but also keep in mind the "Rule of 31." The rule of 31 is a way to figure an APPROXIMATE place where your ball should exit the oil pattern as it hits the dry boards on the back end of the alley. For example, if your pattern is 38 feet long your exit point should be about 7 board (38-31=7). This is a good way to figure out where to begin...

Thanks guys for the info. I have taken a look at about 5 different oiling patterns on the videos that you have suggested. Informative.

Rule of 31 works well. As Jay said, pattern length minus 31 equals board you want to ball to EXIT THE OIL PATTERN at. Different than break point. That's the mistake I made last year and couldn't hit the pocket with a GPS.
Basically, short patterns play outside right at the oil line. Long patterns don't leave enough room to hook after the oil playing that way so the general rule of thumb is to move inside some (depending on style). The longer patterns I usually started practice playing 25 to 15 and adjusted from there.

There are plenty of videos posted on YouTube that provide tips on how to play the PBA "animal" patterns.
