when you have your fingers inserted into the ball, what is 'changing' when your index finger is placed beside the middle finger vs pinky finger against ring finger? Will one way or another effect track position? Will it effect rev rate?

Last night I tried bowling with both my index and pinkie fingers spread as wide as I could to help hold onto the ball. My fingers/thumb were all shrunken due to the weather, and I couldn't stop losing the ball on the release. Was actually too clean. Taped up the thumb hole but just wasn't enough. Felt strange but did help.
