Default ok finally got the release down....but

Haven't posted in a bit, I'm am 61 yrs old trying to make a small comeback after 30 years. I finally got my ball to hook pretty well but it will not drive through the pins. i am leaving th 5 pin on shots that look awesome? Where do I start looking for answers. I'm using a 16lb nvs and it sure looks like it's rolling nice but no carry

I was in your shoes a few years ago. Started back with my Black Beauty hard rubber ball. Visited the pro shop and learned that the lanes had changed, added oil for patterning and reactive resin balls. That's why my ball wasn't hooking much at all. Not sure what an NVS is, but if you're hitting the pocket nicely you're way ahead of the game. Since you're leaving lots of 5-pins, that tells me that you're ball is deflecting rather than driving through the pins even though it's 16 lbs. Since you say that you've got the ball to hook, I wonder how the ball is rolling. Take a look at the oil lines left on the ball and see if the oil tracks are close to the finger and thumb holes. Mine ride pretty high and are about an inch away. If they're quite a ways away, you're throwing the spinner and it likely won't hook all that much and won't have carry either.

If that's the case, I'd recommend that you try to keep your hand behind the ball more and keep your fingers underneath the ball at the point of release. Hope this helps...

Found a little bit about the Ebonite NVS ball you have. Guess it was available in the 2006-7 time frame. Not that long ago and it's reactive resin, too. It appeared to be a pretty darn good ball back in the day. You sound like you should stop by the pro shop and get the inserts. Perhaps you should consider getting your fit checked, too.

When I came back to the game, I tried using my Brunswick LT48. It felt pretty good, but the finger inserts needed replacing at least and I was throwing a full-roller.

Following my visit to the pro shop I had a new reactive ball and drilled so that it would work well with a 3/4 roller or semi-roller I guess. Never threw the full-roller again. My hook came back and was bowling around 165 or so to start after 30 years... Since then I've improved quite a bit and feel comfortable on these new fangled synthetic lanes using the reactive balls. The grip I have on my ball now has the thumb hole angled forward rather than the reverse hole it had on my old stuff. Also, the finger holes are now reverse angled as my fingers were getting pretty stiff after bowling several games.

Rolled my first 700 series just this last week with the last game a 280 in our senior league. I suppose all the folks in our league think I should be bowling with the PBA50 guys or something... Good luck...

You hit it on the head. I went this morning and the ball was falling out of my hand. I do need inserts for sure especially after ( I hate to admit this) but the finger holes were tight so me, Mr. fix it all took a dremel to them and now they are too big. I looked in my bag for my old caulk stick inserts and they weren't there. i will get the rubber inserts this week. On a good note I did in fact blow out a couple of 5 pins when I was able to get the ball on the right side of the lane. i also have an issue with pulling the ball but I write that off to a bad back and a horrible approach. i averaged a whole 156 for 4 games today...I deal with tom dougherty he owns the pro shop at my house and bowls out of there....

Talk to Mr. Dougherty about the inserts a little bit. My first reactive resin ball was fitted with inserts with lifts. About a year or two later a bowling coach recommended to go with ovals only which improved things a lot for me as I tend to grab at the ball at the release point. Just guessing here, but if you tend to pull the ball to the left, you're likely turning your hand clockwise before the release point rather than keeping your hand behind the ball. See if you can keep your index finger pointing towards the pins which will keep your thumb pointing out toward the right throughout the swing... Good luck!
