Default Help me with my arsenal!!!

    Hello,

I recently started bowling and have improved a great deal and hope to improve even more. In fact, I eventually hope to join an amateur tour. As one factor in achieving this, I've been looking into ways to improve my ball arsenal. I currently have the following balls in my arsenal:

A Storm Virtual Gravity NANO drilled for a strong backend reaction
A Brunswick C (System) Alpha Max drilled so that the ball reacts with the lane sooner
An Ebonite Tornado drilled for a strong backend reaction (exactly like my NANO)
And a Brunswick T-Zone that I use for spares

To me it seems that between the C (System) and the NANO I have what I need for heavy oil conditions. It seems that the Tornado can handle dry conditions and it seems that the T-Zone works for spares. With that being said, it appears that it may be useful to get a ball for medium oil. Do you guys agree and have any recommendations for balls? I value any feedback I can get.

    Thank you,
    Casey

    Hi Casey,

You definitely have a good start with the Nano and alpha-max, both are good balls which can be of use to you. When creating an arsenal, having different surfaces is as important as having a bunch of different bowling balls. At this time I'd make sure those two balls have different surfaces. Both are designed to hook early for heavy oil. If it were me, I'd probably have the Nano at 2000 with no polish and the alpha-max at 4000 with polish in order to cover some medium conditions. When you add other bowling balls to your arsenal, this can change.

A couple of bowling balls I would look at to round out your arsenal would be the Storm Marvel Pearl (length with a strong, controllable backend reaction), Roto Grip Outlaw (benchmark reaction in order to judge the lane condition and make adjustments) and something for med-dry like the Storm Frantic, Roto Rising Star or Storm Tropical Heat Hybrid.

Obviously, we've never seen you bowl so it's hard to really give you the best suggestions. If you could give us some more info (rev rate, speed, axis tilt and rotation) or post some video of you bowling, we could give you even better suggestions.

For value, it would be hard to beat a Loaded Revolver for $80 shipped on bowlingball.com Ya it's a year old and on close-out, but at that price it's a heck of a bargain and it fits perfectly between your Alpha Max and Tornado.

for a mid performance ball you could take a look at the storm crossroad or even the storm frantic both those balls would do great in there but it comes down to what ball you choice and what ball you think would do great for you.

Thank you guys so much for the help. I am headed to the lanes tomorrow so I will have video of my shot for you guys to analyze then. I have been bowling seriously for less than a year so don't be too critical. In the meantime, I will leave you with this: I believe I am a stroker (at least I want to be) with a low to medium rev rate, and a medium ball speed. As for axis tilt and rotation, I am still learning the terminology so if you could let me know what that is all about, that would be great. Like I said, I will get video to you soon in case I am mistaken. Let me know if you need anything else.

    Thanks,
    Casey

Its pretty simple. when you release a bowling ball properly, it rotates around an imaginary line through the center of the ball called the axis. If you had no axis rotation the ball would roll straight down the lane. Up to a certain point, the more axis rotation - the more hook. Axis tilt is the angle between the lane surface and the axis. At zero degrees of axis tilt you can hear the thumb hole hitting the lane. No axis rotation plus no axis tilt generally works great for throwing dead straight at spares. As with rotation, a certain amount of axis tilt is good, too much and ball just spins into the pins rather than driving into the rack.
