The pitch of the hole can affect how easily the thumb comes out.

For most spares there's no need for a lot of revs, so its not a big deal if the thumb comes out at almost the same time as the fingers.

Or are you saying that your thumb is coming out too soon when using your strike ball?

That does sound like a problem. Hopefully one of the guys who knows more about ball drilling can chime in.

They are either not the same or the pitch is different. I would say extremely different but that is a relative term.

Start with a piece of tape in thumb hole and see if that helps. Also put a piece of thumb tape on back of your thumb as well.

If tape helps, and you are correct that the hole sizes are exactly the same, both holes are to large and you're probably having to grip both ball more than you should.

Tape is a cheap fix, there is one school of thought that the hole should be sized so that you need one or two pieces of tape normally. That way, if your thumb swells you can take a piece or two out, or if it shrinks you can add.
