As for any technical aspect on how cover thickness affects the ball, I can't really say.
The main thing is it will be more prone to cracking, like around the holes and such. (My slant HD had a thinner cover than that and started cracking after just a few games.)
While I don't quite subscribe to the glue theory on cracking.
When putting in inserts etc. make sure to place the glue below the level of the coverstock and bevel the finger holes. To help lower the chances of cracks forming. (especially if you have a high track!)
