Thread: League bowler, its your turn!

Default League bowler, its your turn!

Anybody else have people on league that are absent 25% of the time when its their turn ?
They are playing lotto, scrabble, tiddlywinks, yapping, smoking, in the bar , etc ..

It tends to get on my nerves a bit, when my team is all sitting at the lane and we are staring at the monitors which are BOTH waiting for members of the opposite team.
One of them is usually there but they have to wait because they don't want to bowl before the guy whose supposed to be up before them.
So i say thats it, i'm going in the bar. Once, a guy who we were waiting for comes back and his partner lets me know. I'll say ill be out after you both go.

Well this makes him very upset, he leaves the bar and bangs on the window a couple times saying 'come on' meanwhile he could just be bowling... his name is on the screen and he is able to go.
I would be right out and go twice in a row, not really holding anyone up. Not like i was going to wait for them both to go then go play lotto and come back like what they had just done to us.

couple teams like that in my league. The main offenders are the guys whom i have never seen sober in the 2 leagues ive been in with them. I can affect my bowling cuz i either get cold or i just end up getting annoyed at said person which throws off my whole game

It's you vs. the pins. That's it... that is all there is.
When your feet hit the approach, nothing else matters!

As a relatively new bowler, I'm learning this. Then I stumbled across this:

There's kind of a Zen aspect to bowling. The pins are either staying up or down before you even throw your arm back. It's kind of a mind-set. You want to be in this perfect mind-set before you released the ball. - Jeff Bridges

Does anybody have league officers that actually do anything? There are rules regarding speed of play but it seems most league officers either don't know hardly any rules or have the 'nads to enforce them.
I've never had to do more than give a warning but common sense also has to come into play. My team smokes. If the other team doesn't, we don't. None of us drink but we are patient when we know the bartender is a bit slow.

We actually have a fairly active Sargent at Arms who's job it is to patrol this....never had much of an issue. Our Friday Night League is a fairly competitive group of folks but we have a lot of fun. There is a lot of 'self policing' that goes on...and the fact that they have serving staff that goes around to take folks drink and food orders helps out a little also :-)

Our secretary on Saturdays has been doing it for 21 years. I dated her for a bit before I married this wife. I saw first hand all she had to do and was amazed. The following year I was elected President and went to bowl.com to see what I was suppose to do. After reading I immediately called her. Now I know why she nominated me, I am the first President she's had that actually tried to fulfill the duties. She was shocked the first time I asked to see the deposit slips.

I bowled on my Monday league for three years before I found out who the President was. The Secretary's have more of a presence on league night but an active President will ensure everybody knows who they are. BTW, each team captain is also considered a league officer.

Next league meeting bring up the much too long time waiting and see if you can get the officers to enforce a reasonable time frame.

There are quite a few of these around the league I bowl in. The first type is the person who is talking to someone else and instead of taking a break, bowling his turn, then returning to the conversation, he chooses to continue to talk while other people wait on him. Twenty seconds or so is fine. I do that if I just want to finish a quick thought. But some people do it to extremes. The most annoying type is the one who spends his entire time in the bar so he can't even see what is going on. He will come out periodically (usually not often enough) to see if it's his turn, but quite often someone will go see where he is. Those are the worst types because they aren't even anywhere close to the lanes.

I have one on my team in summer league, only he is absent 80% of the time when it is his turn. Drives me bonkers. I am certain it is one of the reasons we are always the last team to finish.
